30883QLD: Course in Applied Core Skills (ACS)

The Course in Applied Core Skills (ACS) provides a structured curriculum based on the Australian Core Skills Framework – the National English Language, Literacy and Numeracy competency standards (ACSF). Qualified language, literacy and numeracy providers are able to use this curriculum to teach social, workplace and community language, literacy and numeracy skills. This is the only course that mirrors the flexibility of the ACSF and the reality of the development of LLN skills by individuals.

This course has been developed to provide the bridge to further education or training, or employment for those who need to improve their language, literacy and numeracy communicative skills. It recognises the generic and specific language, literacy and numeracy communicative skills necessary to access opportunities for employment and, thus, each program is tailored or customised to the participant’s assessed levels of language, literacy and numeracy skills as described in the ACSF - levels 1 to 5.

This course is the vehicle to improve the LLN skills of those needing to enter tertiary, secondary and further education as well as employment. Language learners whose work and life experience is sufficient for them to gain employment but their knowledge of the Australian Workplace English language is limited, and young people who are in alternative education programs that reflect their vocational aspirations, also benefit from the flexibility and relevance of this course. Learners who complete this course – from 100 to 800 hours or more - will gain entry to accredited courses, part-time and full-time work, the opportunity to return to mainstream schooling or to improve their own and their children’s’ knowledge and participation in the community.

The Course is structured so that all learners are assessed at the initial entry and then an individualised training plan is determined.
